Botox Cosmetic Treatment

BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is a simple, nonsurgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that develop over time. One 10-minute treatment -- a few tiny injections -- relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to 4 months. BOTOX Cosmetic has been widely tested. Now it’s approved by the FDA.

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected in small doses into specific muscles, Botox blocks the chemical signals that cause muscles to contract. Small, diluted amounts can be directly injected into specific muscles causing controlled weakening of the muscles. When the muscles can't tighten, the skin flattens and appears smoother and less wrinkled.

BOTOX Cosmetic is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Very low doses of BOTOX Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the overactive muscles that cause lines to form. BOTOX Cosmetic works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles. The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are usually confined to the injected region; it does not travel throughout the body.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Botox as a temporary treatment for moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. The FDA approved such usage in the late 1980s upon the discovery that Botox could stop ailments like blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). Cosmetic physicians have been using Botox for years to successfully treat wrinkles and facial creases. In April 2002, Botox gained FDA approval for treatment of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows - called glabellar lines. However, Botox is often used for other areas of the face as well.

The results are dramatic and apparent within days. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, BOTOX Cosmetic virtually "erases" these lines.

Unlike surgery, BOTOX Cosmetic is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed. With BOTOX Cosmetic, they’ll know you’ve done something, they just won’t know what.

BOTOX Cosmetic is not magic. It’s medicine, the result of years of careful research and testing. Allergan’s BOTOX product is the only one of its type with over 10 years of success in treating patients with a variety of conditions. With dosing specific to treat frown lines, this same product is now available as BOTOX Cosmetic.

BOTOX Cosmetic will not radically change your appearance or make you look like you’ve had "work done." It will not make you look 20 years younger. Because it’s highly localized and administered intramuscularly, its effects are usually confined to the region of injection, and BOTOX Cosmetic does not remain in your body indefinitely.

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox. Botox is for people who want to minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

Common treatment areas for Botox may include:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
  • Crow's-feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Forehead creases
  • Thick bands on the neck

However, not all facial wrinkles benefit from Botox injections. Botox won't reverse wrinkling caused by sun damage. Also, it's less effective treating the lines around your mouth because muscles in this area are needed for eating and talking. Your skin type, skin thickness and degree of wrinkling all play a role in determining whether these injections are effective for you.

The Botox treatment procedure takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before treatment as well in order to reduce bruising.

If doing all you can to look your best is important to you, BOTOX Cosmetic may be for you. If reducing those tough lines between your brows would make you feel more approachable, BOTOX Cosmetic may be for you. Thousands of appearance-conscious women and men have already discovered the benefits of BOTOX Cosmetic. Not just models and movie stars, but ordinary people -- teachers, mothers, and business people from all walks of life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Botox Procedure

How is BOTOX Cosmetic treatment administered?

Our Botox specialist will determine exactly where to administer several tiny injections to achieve the best results. No anesthesia is required, although some doctors may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief -- most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. It is unlikely you will develop significant side effects, although some people may develop slight temporary bruising at the injection site, which can easily be covered by makeup. You may resume normal activity immediately.

Within days, you'll see a marked improvement which may continue to improve for as long as a week and should last up to 4 months.

BOTOX Cosmetic relaxes the overactive muscles whose repeated contractions cause the lines between your brows to form. So you can frown, smile, or look surprised -- without the furrows, creases, and wrinkles.

The most common side effects are headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. BOTOX Cosmetic should not be used if there is an infection at the injection site.

How Long Does a Botox Injection Last?

The effects from Botox will last four to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and wrinkles need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

Is there a side effect to Botox Treatment?

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours, can occur, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping. This usually resolves in three weeks. This development is usually caused by migration of the Botox and for this reason, you shouldn't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lay down for three to four hours. There have been no allergies associated with Botox to date.

Can I get Botox Treatment when I'm pregnant?

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not use Botox.

Is there anything I need to do before my Botox Procedure?

Our Botox specialist will need to meet with you before your procedure. Generally, you will talk about your medical history. Our Botox specialist will ask questions about medical conditions you have or have had, as well as any medications you're taking. Photographs of your face will also be taken from different angles. Our Botox specialist uses these photos for before-and-after assessments and long-term reviews. Our Botox specialist will also explain what Botox can and can't do for you and what your results might be.

How are Botox injections done?

Our Botox specialist uses a thin needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox into specific muscles. By carefully choosing the muscles to treat, the doctor weakens only the wrinkle-producing muscles to preserve your natural facial expressions.

The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including your facial features, the extent of the wrinkling and the specific area being treated. For example, crow's-feet usually require two to five injections. Furrows in your forehead could take eight or more injections.

Botox injections take about 10 to 15 minutes and are usually done in a doctor's office. You may experience mild pain with the injections, but most people find the discomfort tolerable. The procedure requires no anesthesia.

Is BOTOX Cosmetic treatment painful?

Discomfort is minimal and brief. Our Botox specialist may choose to use a local anesthetic cream or ice to minimize this. Once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort.

What can I expect after the Botox Treatment?

Botox injections require no downtime; you can resume your normal daily activities immediately. You may have headaches for a few hours after the treatment. Although, care should be taken, not to rub or massage the treated areas. This can cause the toxin to migrate to a different area of your face. If this happens, temporary facial weakness or drooping is possible.

You'll notice results within a few days, but the full effect takes about two weeks. Results aren't permanent, however. Once the Botox has taken effect, it takes three to six months for the affected muscles to begin functioning again. So to maintain your look, you need follow-up injections every few months.

Are there side effects and risks for having Botox?

Botox injections are relatively safe, but side effects and complications can occur. Side effect may include pain and bruising at the injection site, redness, headache, flu-like symptoms, nausea, temporary facial weakness or drooping, spread of the toxin beyond the treatment area, which can cause botulism-like symptoms (trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, slurred speech and breathing problems).

Can Botox work for a man or a younger woman?

Any woman or man who is concerned about the appearance of their frown lines can consider BOTOX Cosmetic. Treatment can be used by people from ages 18 to 65, regardless of sex. Laser, Beauty and Wellness Center - Orange County's Medical Spa can help you decide if Botox is right for you.

How long will my Botox Treatment last before I will need another one?

BOTOX Cosmetic lasts up to 4 months.

Will my lines look worse if I choose not to continue treatments?

No. Your lines gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.

Is BOTOX Cosmetic expensive?

When considering your facial aesthetic options, you'll find that BOTOX Cosmetic is quite affordable. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s survey, BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the least expensive facial aesthetic procedures, ranking 7th in the 9 most widely-used procedures in the United States. Like other appearance-related investments, such as hair coloring and cuts, teeth whitening, and chemical peels, the cost must be weighed relative to your expectations. Our Botox specialist will discuss pricing during individual consultation. Botox treatments are customized to individual patient needs and concerns and thus prices may vary between patients.
