Pigmentation can be caused from aging and repeated exposure to the sun. This causes the melanin-producing cells to lose their ability to spread pigment evenly over the skin. The result is dark spots, blotches, or freckles appearing on the skin. Pigmentation occurs mostly in areas that have most exposure to sun, including face, neck, and hands and can also result in uneven tanning. Pregnancy and the use of the contraceptive pills can also cause pigmentation because the increased levels of estrogen can trigger melanin producing hormones, which leads to the development of these darker skin spots.
Laser & Vitality Institute has many different options for treating pigmentation regardless of skin type. A laser light is one option that can be used effectively. This laser utilizes a specific wavelength of energy to target the pigmented spots in a safe manner without affecting the surrounding skin tissue. These treatments can be used to improve pigmentation, freckles, spots and sun damaged skin. There can be many forms of pigmentation. A consultation with Dr. Devera will help to determine your specific type and assess suitability for pigmentation treatment.
Treatment can range from about twenty to thirty minutes. There is only mild discomfort. Redness, that will subside within a few hours after the treatment is performed. Most patients describe a sensation of a small rubber band being snapped on the skin. Immediately after treatment, your skin may sting and be slightly hot similar to suffering a mild sunburn. This may be followed by a slight swelling in the treated area that lasts up to 12 hours. These symptoms can be treated with a cold ice compress. You will be able to resume your normal activities the following day and foundation will easily mask any darkened spots. It is recommended that you follow after procedures to keep from any complications developing. These can include avoiding sun exposure; hot baths or showers; excessive exercise; the use of any retinoid, glycolic acid or any astringents for at least 24 hours after your treatment. You can wear foundation after the treatment but avoid scratching or exfoliating the treated areas or you may cause scarring.
Treatment is based on individual need and depends on the depth and type of pigment, on average most patients have 2-3 treatments spaced in 3-4 week increments. Most patients see marked improvement in pigmentation after two to three treatments spaced in three week increments for optimal results. There are some individuals who will notice about 50% reduction in color just after one treatment, but results will vary. Contact the office for more details.
